Aunt Jemima, Mother Nature, Taking Walks on Clay

Well, I apologize for the delays here, I have been away for a few days and had limited access to the web. Of course using a little call it "Clay Street sense", I didn't think it was a good idea to let people know that I was going to be gone. This isn't Compton but, its also not Niceville, USA either. There are some "opportunistic investors" that migrate back here. You know the type, the one's you read about how they break into a car because some dummy left his or her IPod sitting on the dash or the ones who walk around with money in their hands. Case and point the other night some dumb commuter drug buyer was robbed as he was attempting to make a purchase becuase he was holding his 20 in the wide open--dont do drugs kids it makes you STUPID. Nah, not happening to me, but again I am not so brazen to think that it can not happen back here and for that reason I am mindful. I am not however, living in fear, that is NOT happening.

Anyway, this brings me to my current feelings towards Mother Nature. Yeah, well during my hiatus there was apparently some pretty severe, knock your power out, delay airport traffic, kind of storms. Well, it was also a cleanse your BGE power box of all the syrup type of storm. Annoyed. Yes, Mother Nature, I am quite annoyed tonight because you have undone my sabatoge! So, me being the sabatouer that I am slid over to the 7-11 this morning and copped a few more bottles. Yes, Mother Nature I AM BUILDING A STASH!!! So, go ahead and rain again I have back up!
Tonight, or tomorrow morning, I have a feeling my favorite Aunt will be making her presence felt.

In a litte bit I am about to walk down to meet Don Minor. Don and his wife live over on Northwest Street which is the street that I was first shown by Kathy Ebner (to get caught up on Kathy and my feeling about Northwest Street you should read my first blog which gives you history of how I got here). Northwest is a block and half or two blocks away and yes I am going to walk there. Believe it or not but, we do walk to see neighbors back here. Crazy right?

Okay, so now that I have wildly amazed that people actually walk to see their neighbors I will tell you what Don and I are going to talk about, well at least what I think we are going to talk about. Don is spearheading the Old 4th Ward Community Association. This is, from what I understand some sort of collective Clay Street area kind of action committee. So, he is going to be briefing me on the what's what.

With that being said, I should probably be getting changed as I am still in the suit and tie from my day at the office. Oh yes, I do wear a suit and tie in and out of my house back here too! Imagine that.

Keep an eye out for a sticky middle aged african american woman with a do rag on her head...shes rumored to be on Clay somewhere.

Hey man, I agree that you can not live in fear. I think it's admirable that you are putting yourself out there and making the best of your block. People don't care enough about the environment that they live in. Some people have lived around crap their whole lives and they become immune to it. Can't say it's always their fault. However, maybe you are on the way to changing that train of thought. By showing that you do give a damn that might carry over to the neighbors so that they understand that you should have pride in your hood and your block. I mean let's face it, we spend 80% - 90% of our waking moments in the office. I know I want to be able to come home to a comfortable block and clean house so that I can kick back, relax and keep my mind moving on positive things. That's just me. Hey, sometimes you have to lay down a little syrup to make that burned pancake taste good!! - Red

Yes, here's to burned pancakes and syrup! Thank you Red for your comments, it helps provoke some thoughts.

When I come home I kick back, relax, and keep my mind moving on positive things. My house is clean, that is the stereotype that I am trying to crush back here. See mad people think its ALL bad, but for the most part its good. The problem is all you get to see in the news for the most part is all the bad.

You are right though, there are people who for the most part just seem to gravitate to the drama. I believe the expression is that water seeks its own level right?

When you say "copped a couple bottles" I hope you dont mean you went to the store and stole them.....

Nah, I earn money, pay taxes, and do what I can to make the world a better place. I paid for the sticky supplies. By saying "copped" I mean purchased. A little hip hop slang got a hold of me there. I should put up the lyrics to Big L's "Ebonics" as a translator for the times that my language gets somewhat streety.

Timm,

We met briefly at the at the last Old fourth ward assocation meeting, and I'm curious about you and Don Minor-Lamb's motives. So if you have a moment in between your important job and antics as "Aunt Jemima" perhaps you can answer a question for me. Why is that two white men of what aleast appear to be adquate means choose to live in the "ghetto"?

I can't speak for Don Minor. I can only speak for myself and off top I don't consider Clay Street the ghetto. I believe Clay Street is the coolest block in all of Maryland. The history that is here is amazing. Me being heavily involved in the music scene, I was attracted to Clay Street as soon as I learned that James Brown, Ella Fitzgerald, and the like have all spent time here. That is history. The only other spot in Maryland that I think holds as much musical significance could be North Avenue in Baltimore. Mind you the North Ave thing is dear to me because I am a big fan of Tupac Shakur.

That being said, Clay Street was also affordable for me, I could not live anywhere else in downtown Annapolis when I moved here. I couldn't have even afforded the rent. Prior to living here I rented a basement in Eastport. Prior to that I lived in an RV for the better part of 2 years touring the US and Canada over and over as part of the hip hop group Arcane.

If you read all of my blog entries you will see where I am coming from, I am calling them like I see them across the board.

I understand the skepticism, I really do but, I am here because this is where I wanted to be.

Peace and respect to everyone that has given their opinions that is what this blog is all about, sharing opinions and breaking down the barriers that seperate the two cities of Annapolis.

Timm,

Thank you for taking the time to respond and be assured thatI have read all of your blog entries. I look forward to hearing some of your ideas for reshaping Clay Street. I appreciate your interest my culture and my community excuse me "our community." If I can be perfectly honest with you I don't share your apparent humor regarding you proposed EBONICS lessons and your reference to the middle aged african american women with a do-rag on her head. In the words of Dr. Martin Luther King consious ignorance is never an excuse.
